12/12/2022 (Agence Europe) – The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) and its European counterpart (EFJ) are sounding the alarm: 12 journalists have been killed in Europe this year, 11 of them in Ukraine, and 124 are in prison, including one in Poland. Ricardo Gutiérrez, General Secretary of the European Federation of Journalists (EFJ) called on European countries “to adopt the IFJ Convention on the Safety and Independence of Journalists, but also call to implement without delay the concrete provisions set out in Council of Europe Recommendation 2016/4 on the protection of journalism”. Published annually on International Human Rights Day on 10 December, the statistics also coincide with a discussion on the safety of journalists at the European Parliament plenary session on Wednesday 14 December.
