The Council of the EU on Thursday 1 December adopted conclusions for the establishment of a European Agenda for Tourism 2030, which will include a set of measures, including a multi-annual work plan to help Member States, public authorities, the Commission and stakeholders to make the tourism sector greener, more resilient and more digital.
The adopted conclusions invite Member States to better share knowledge and best practice on the development and implementation of strategies, “taking into account the economic, environmental, cultural and social sustainability of tourism”.
Member States should also contribute to “strengthening the resilience of the tourism ecosystem between sectors and different public and private stakeholders” while “contributing to the green transition of the tourism ecosystem” through “supporting the decarbonisation of mobility, through innovation, new and disruptive technologies”.
The European Commission, for its part, is being asked to review the regulatory framework for passenger rights and package travel to ensure its ability to cope with “major disruptions” and to “take into account the risks of a liquidity crisis”. The Commission should also further develop the EU Tourism Dashboard (see EUROPE 13046/34) and support the digitalisation of SMEs.
Tourism stakeholders should commit to the implementation of this European Agenda for Tourism 2030 by raising awareness among their partners and customers. They should also commit “through concrete pledges, on a voluntary basis” to the implementation of the actions provided for in the Agenda.
