MEPs call for alignment of financing for development with SDGs and Paris Agreement on climate

The multiple crises - from the banking, economic and monetary crisis of 2008, to the Covid-19 crisis, to the food and energy crisis - must not prevent the promises to finance official development assistance made at the United Nations in 2015 in Addis Ababa and the commitments made in the same year under the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Paris Agreement on climate from being fulfilled, stresses the report by Charles Goerens (Renew Europe, Luxembourgish), adopted unanimously on 26 October (23 votes in favour, 0 against, 0 abstentions) by the European Parliament’s Committee on Development.

This report recommends that the future European Financial Architecture for Development (the NDICI Global Europe instrument of the EU budget, the EIB, the EBRD, the national development banks) be guided by the principles and objectives set out in these UN agreements.

MEPs believe that this “long-awaited” European financial architecture and the EU’s overall strategy on the SDGs “must reflect and facilitate a coordinated and coherent set of internal and external EU policies and commitments”. They regret that the Commission has not yet developed an integrated and holistic SDG implementation strategy.

Furthermore, they call for strengthening and improving the institutional framework and reducing the burden of bureaucratic coordination.
