European Commission will present a strategy on carbon capture, utilisation and storage in 2023

27/10/2022 (Agence Europe)The European Commission will present a Communication on a strategic vision for the carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS) sector next year, announced European Commissioner for Energy Kadri Simson on Thursday 27 October at an annual forum on the subject in Oslo. The strategy, she explained, would include quantifying the potential role that CCUS technologies can play in decarbonisation, as well as providing greater certainty for investors by clarifying the rules governing CO2 infrastructure. According to Mrs Simson, financing is one of the three major obstacles, along with infrastructure and regulation, that prevent the EU from unlocking the sector’s full potential. However, the Commission’s models show that “the EU will need to capture and utilise or store between 300 and 640 Million tonnes of CO2 per year by 2050 to meet its climate goals”, the Commissioner said.
