04/10/2022 (Agence Europe) – On Monday, 3 October, the spokesperson for the European External Action Service (EEAS) took note of reports indicating that, earlier that day, Turkey and Libya’s Government of National Unity had signed an agreement on hydrocarbon exploration in Libyan territorial waters and on Libyan soil, which was based on the 2019 Memorandum of Understanding on delimitation of maritime jurisdiction areas in the Mediterranean. He reiterated that, for the EU, this memorandum of understanding “infringes upon the sovereign rights of third States, does not comply with the Law of the Sea and cannot produce any legal consequences for third States”. “Actions that could undermine regional stability should be avoided”, the spokesperson warned. Emphasising that the new agreement had not yet been made public, he felt that further clarification on its content was needed. (CG)
