12/09/2022 (Agence Europe) – On Thursday 8 September, the European Commission launched a call for evidence on the digitalisation of travel documents to facilitate travel. This initiative is part of the Schengen strategy adopted in 2021 - which aims, among other things, to harmonise the format of digital travel documents - and in line with the ‘Digital Compass’ for the ‘EU’s Digital Decade’. In concrete terms, the initiative will have to respond to the major challenges of the future in the field of travel, as the number of travellers is expected to increase and the pandemic has greatly increased the use of digital documents. In addition, the text should also place the integration of biometric solutions at the centre of its priorities to facilitate authorities’ checks and increase confidence in the identity of travellers.
