05/09/2022 (Agence Europe) – On Monday 5 September, following a meeting with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, French President Emmanuel Macron said France was in favour of capping the price of Russian gas delivered to Europe by pipeline as well as joint gas purchasing practices. “If the (European) Commission were to decide upon a ceiling for the price of gas bought through pipelines from Russia, France would support such a measure”, he said, while the European Commission was examining such a possibility (see EUROPE 13014/7). Regarding electricity prices, Macron supported the introduction of a “European contribution mechanism”, which would be required from energy operators. “This contribution could then be paid back to Member States to finance their targeted national measures”, he added, while pleading for “measures to combat speculative practices”. In terms of the ‘electricity’ side, the European Commission appears to be considering a package of three measures (see EUROPE 13012/1). (DG)
