30/08/2022 (Agence Europe) – On Tuesday, 30 August, the European Commission authorised €60 million in French aid to support the fisheries sector, whose businesses are feeling the effects of the UK’s withdrawal from the EU. The aim is to support shipowners who are no longer able to engage in their regular business operations due to Brexit and who are considering permanently shutting down their businesses as a result. The measure is applicable until 31 June 2023. The aid compensates the shipowner on the basis of a scale that is based on two factors: the tonnage of the ship and the severance that the owner is required to pay when making crew members redundant. The portion based on tonnage increases as the ship’s tonnage increases. The measure is expected to be fully funded from the Brexit Adjustment Reserve. (LC)
