30/08/2022 (Agence Europe) – “The European Union takes note of the results announced by the National Electoral Commission on the Angolan general elections” held on 24 August, which were conducted in a peaceful environment but are being contested by UNITA (National Union for the Total Independence of Angola). On Tuesday, 30 August, the European External Action Service spokesperson stressed in a statement, “The EU is aware of the complaints by the opposition and civil society on some shortcomings in the electoral process and invites stakeholders to use all legal remedies to address their concerns.” The EU “urges the election authorities to make every possible [effort] to respond to them in a fair and transparent manner” and “encourages an open, constructive and inclusive dialogue between the Government of Angola, opposition political parties and civil society”. The provisional results showed that the MPLA—the party of the outgoing president—is expected to win. (AN)
