30/08/2022 (Agence Europe) – In response to a request from the Ukrainian authorities on 26 August, the EU has delivered 5.5 million potassium iodide tablets through its Civil Protection Mechanism to protect the health of people around the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant in the event of possible radiation exposure, the European Commission announced on 30 August. The tablets, worth €500,000, would be used to prevent inhaled or swallowed radioactive iodine from being absorbed by the thyroid. Five million of these are from the RescEU pool, and 500,000 are from Austria. “No nuclear power plant should ever be used as a theatre of war. It is unacceptable that civilian lives are put in danger. All military action around the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant must stop immediately”, explained the Commissioner for Crisis Management Janez Lenarčič. (AN)
