30/08/2022 (Agence Europe) – On Monday 29 August, the spokesperson for the European External Action Service called for restraint and calm in Iraq after protesters affiliated to Moqtada al-Sadr stormed government institutions. “Following the clashes and escalation in Baghdad, the EU calls on all parties to exercise utmost restraint and to remain calm. It is critical for all actors to avoid any actions that could lead to further violence”, the spokesperson stressed. He recalled that all laws must be respected and the integrity of institutions safeguarded. He said that all parties should try to defuse tensions and engage in political dialogue within the constitutional framework, “the only means to resolve differences”. On Tuesday 30, al-Sadr’s supporters began to withdraw from the Green Zone. (CG)
