On Monday 25 July, the European Commission adopted the €31.5 billion partnership agreement with Romania, which sets out the mobilisation of European cohesion funds for the country over the period 2021-2027.
The ESF+ fund will provide the Romanian authorities with €7.3 billion to facilitate access to employment, especially for young people, and to modernise the Romanian employment service. No less than €3.5 billion will also be used to promote social entrepreneurship.
€6.75 billion in ERDF and cohesion funds will finance the climate transition of the Romanian economy, the creation of green areas, biodiversity conservation, and sustainable urban transport solutions. €2.3 billion of this will be used for water management.
It should be noted that the Just Transition Fund will accompany the end of coal mining in Romania’s coal-mining regions with €2.14 billion in financial aid.
Finally, the EMFAF fund will support sustainable fisheries and aquaculture in the Black Sea with €162.5 million.
The partnership agreement with Romania is the 18th agreement to be adopted by the Commission.
