Brussels, 05/07/2022 (Agence Europe) – On Thursday, 7 July, MEPs will be asked to adopt a motion for a resolution that calls for the right to abortion to be enshrined in the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union in response to the recent US Supreme Court ruling that challenged this right in the United States. “We want to amend the second chapter of the charter by introducing a new article, 7a, that will clearly stipulate that every person has the right to a safe and legal abortion”, declared Soraya Rodríguez (Renew Europe, Spain) on Tuesday, 5 July. She added, “We have to be honest: in the EU, this right is not guaranteed. There are [Member] States, such as Poland, where a legal abortion cannot be performed. Hungary and Slovakia are considering reforms to weaken this right, and abortion is simply illegal in Malta”. (MB/DG)
