To address the growing humanitarian needs in Ukraine, the EU is stepping up its direct operational support to humanitarian organisations working in the country, the European Commission announced on Wednesday 8 June.
The EU has set up and fully funded two warehouses in Ukraine, one in Vinnytsia and one in Dnipro, as well as trucking services to deliver humanitarian aid to those in need.
This operational support is part of the European humanitarian response capacity, currently implemented by the NGO Handicap International. France will also provide co-financing.
The Vinnytsia warehouse is equipped with a temperature-controlled facility to ensure compliance with storage requirements for items such as medicines, the Commission said.
EU-supported trucking operations in Ukraine began in April. So far, they have helped 18 European and local humanitarian partners deliver more than 750 tonnes of humanitarian goods through 56 shipments.
Food and basic necessities, hygiene products and medical supplies were delivered to hard-to-reach areas such as downtown Kharkiv and Kramatorsk. (Original version in French by Aminata Niang)
