The European Parliament adopted by a large majority (437 votes in favour, 142 against and 40 abstentions), on Wednesday, 8 June, the draft report by Jessica Polfjärd (EPP, Sweden) on the revision of the climate Effort Sharing Regulation (ESR).
MEPs are thus aligning themselves with the European Commission’s original proposal for new national greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reduction targets for Member States by 2030.
However, they want less flexibility and more transparency on Member States’ actions under this regulation so that they can be better held accountable if they deviate from their national target.
According to our information, the votes on the amendments did not result in any major changes to the text approved in the Parliament’s Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety (ENVI) (see EUROPE 12954/4).
