02/06/2022 (Agence Europe) – Following an interview between some media, including EUROPE, and Peter Liese (EPP, Germany), the European Parliament’s rapporteur for the review of the EU Emissions Trading System, on Thursday 2 June, we would like to clarify the article entitled: “Final straightaway in European Parliament before a series of votes on ‘Fit for 55’ package”. Based on the words of Mohammed Chahim MEP (S&D, The Netherlands), Parliament’s rapporteur for the ‘Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism’, we reported that the EPP and Renew Europe groups in the European Parliament had agreed on an amendment to reduce the number of emission allowances in circulation in the ETS by 80 million in 2024 (compared to around 117 million in the European Commission’s proposal) and then by 40 million in 2026. The amendment actually foresees a reduction of 70 million in 2024 and 50 million in 2026. (DG)
