02/06/2022 (Agence Europe) – More than 200 firefighters plus technical equipment will be deployed to Greece to help the country deal with forest fires throughout the fire season, the European Commission announced on Thursday 2 June. These resources will come from six countries - Bulgaria, Finland, France, Germany, Romania and Norway - participating in the EU’s Civil Protection Mechanism. The EU will provide funding and coordination. “This will not only allow for a quick response, but also ensure an important sharing of practices for all firefighters involved”, stressed EU Commissioner for Crisis Management Janez Lenarčič. Last year, the forest fires in Greece were particularly fierce, despite the pre-positioning of Canadair aircraft from the RescEU reserve. This has since been expanded (see EUROPE 12837/4, 12745/22).
