Mr Borrell calls for modernising Association Agreement

The High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, called for, during his visit to Chile from 27 April to 1 May, modernising the EU-Chile Association Agreement of 2002.

According to a press release from the European External Action Service, the modernisation would aim to “promote policy dialogue in key areas as well as new standards in the field of sustainable development, gender equality and fair trade”.

The Association Agreement acquires greater relevance in the current geopolitical context to defend our common values and define joint answers to the challenges of the transition towards a greener, more digital and fairer society”, according to Mr Borrell.

The visit was an opportunity to agree on priority areas of cooperation, such as the economic and green agenda, security and migration. The EU also intends to deepen defence and security cooperation with Santiago de Chile, notably in the framework of the ‘Strategic Compass’, the EEAS explained.

Finally, new EU cooperation programmes were announced to promote a green transition in Chile, including the Euroclima+ National Action Plan and the €4 million Green Hydrogen Team Europe initiative. (Original version in French by Camille-Cerise Gessant)
