Juan Fernando López Aguilar sees Leggeri’s resignation as turning point in accountability for all EU agencies

The Chair of the European Parliament’s Committee on Civil Liberties (LIBE), Juan Fernando López Aguilar (S&D, Spain), took note on Monday 2 May of the resignation of Frontex Director Fabrice Leggeri, who was implicated in a report by the European Anti-Fraud Office (see EUROPE 12942/1). He said that it “sets a new reference point on accountability that will not only affect Frontex as the largest EU agency, but also all other EU agencies and specialised offices”.

The Committee on Civil Liberties and the European Parliament will continue to fulfil our duty to scrutinise the appointment of the new Executive Director and the proper functioning of the agency”, the MEP said.

For her part, the Chair of the LIBE Committee’s enquiry group on Frontex, Lena Düpont (EPP, Germany), said on 29 April that “Frontex is facing the greatest challenges due to the considerable expansion of its tasks and powers as well as the geopolitically tense situation at our external borders”.

The extension of the mandate and tasks inevitably leads to administrative difficulties. More and clearer guidance from the European Commission is needed in this regard”, she said in a statement. (Original version in French by Solenn Paulic)
