Schengen acquis, Committee on Civil Liberties MEPs want surprise field visits to Member States to remain unannounced

16/03/2022 (Agence Europe)The European Parliament’s Committee on Civil Liberties has adopted its position on the reform of the Schengen evaluation mechanism by 50 votes to 13 with 4 abstentions. The European Parliament, only consulted, is asking for the 24-hour advance notice for all unannounced visits to be removed. It accepts, however, that such a 24-hour advance notice is possible for random visits to monitor compliance with the acquis. Visits to verify allegations of violations or to countries with internal border controls in place for more than 180 days should always take place without any warning. Furthermore, the European Parliament would like to be involved in the field missions. It also wants NGO evaluations to be included in evaluation reports. The European Parliament will vote on this opinion in plenary. (SP)
