On Monday 7 March, the Ministers of Culture, Audiovisual and Media of the EU Member States approved a joint declaration on the situation in Ukraine in which they underlined their support for Ukrainian artists, journalists, media and cultural professionals.
At the informal meeting, the competent ministers also pledged to support cultural institutions willing to enable artists, cultural practitioners and journalists to continue their work.
In addition, during the meeting, which was modified by the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the ministers also discussed the issue of disinformation, after the European Union adopted a decision on 1 March to ban the Russian state media RT and Sputnik (see EUROPE 12902/9).
In terms of the media, the ministers meeting in Angers also took stock of the relationship with information in general and the future of the media. Discussions were held on the role of States and the EU in consolidating the media business model, while “keeping in mind the objectives of pluralism and independence”, said the French Presidency of the EU Council.
Finally, part of the discussions was devoted to the means to be implemented to promote and facilitate the discovery of cultural content from the EU online, “given the abundance” of supply.
