09/03/2022 (Agence Europe) – On Tuesday 8 March, the European Commission opened a period of consultation to complete the existing rules in order to increase the share of rail traffic in international freight and passenger transport. In particular, the Commission considers that the current infrastructure suffers from insufficient use and that its management lacks cross-border coordination. In addition, the Commission deplores the lack of competition in long-distance passenger rail transport and highlights the poor interoperability of digital tools, “where they exist”. The Commission proposes several options to address these issues, such as clarifying and developing existing tools, modernising and harmonising rules across the board, and centralising decision-making and operational functions at European level by adding governance and an operational body at network level.
