10/02/2022 (Agence Europe) – The EUNAVFOR MED Irini operation has monitored 5,700 vessels since its launch on 31 March 2020 via radio calls, with almost 1,200 of these between 31 October 2021 and 31 January 2022, according to figures updated on 31 January by the operation. The EU mission has carried out 32 friendly approaches in the last three months and inspected one suspect vessel (see EUROPE 12828/18). Irini also investigated 120 suspicious flights during the quarter and provided two special reports to the UN Panel of Experts on Libya. Through the Integrated Crime Information Cell, the operation issued seven recommendations to the relevant law enforcement authorities for the inspection of suspect vessels in the ports of EU Member States, of which five were implemented.
