Several NGOs call for a substantial strengthening of rules on control

On Thursday 10 February, several NGOs called for stricter rules on controlling fishing operations, including the obligation for all 12-metre vessels to be equipped with on-board cameras (CCTV) to verify the ban on discards at sea.

At the time of the One Ocean summit, NGOs such as Our Fish, Seas At Risk, WWF, Oceana etc. want to influence the negotiations between EU institutions on the revision of the regulation on controls by suggesting more ambitious measures than those currently under discussion, such as the installation of on-board cameras for vessels over 24 metres (see EUROPE 12883/4).

NGOs want: - to ensure that comprehensive fishing data is collected on board all EU vessels, including the recording of incidental catches of sensitive species; - the reporting of all by-catches in the electronic logbooks on all vessels, including those fishing outside EU waters; - the use of remote electronic monitoring (REM) systems, including CCTV cameras, to be mandatory for all vessels over 12 metres, as well as for all vessels under 12 metres that are at high risk of by-catching vulnerable species or that do not comply with the rules of the Common Fisheries Policy (CFP).
