European Commission consults on several judicial cooperation issues

The Commission opened two public consultations on 25 January – lasting until 22 February – on judicial cooperation for: - the service of legal documents using modern technology; - judicial cooperation between EU countries in obtaining evidence in civil/commercial matters by using modern technology.

In both cases, the Commission must define: - technical specifications for communication methods; - safety targets; - minimum availability targets and the creation of a steering board.

The aim of both is to collect opinions for adopting implementing regulations in the first quarter of 2022. However, these two texts are not linked to the same basic regulation.

In addition, the European Commission is also holding a consultation until 21 February to assess the application of the 2016 Directive on the protection of personal data as processed by authorities responsible for the prevention, investigation, detection or execution of criminal offences.
