Common charger, EU Council improves consumer information

The Member States’ ambassadors to the European Union (Coreper) adopted their position on the proposed Common Charger Directive on Wednesday 26 January, strengthening the provisions on consumer communications.

As reported by EUROPE (see EUROPE 12875/8), Member States have strengthened the provisions on information provided to consumers by adding visual elements to indicate whether a product was sold with or without a charger. They also wanted to provide a better framework for the delegation of power to the European Commission to adapt technical specifications, particularly in the absence of European or international standards.

For its part, the European Parliament is starting its negotiation work this week under the leadership of Alex Saliba (S&D) from Malta. The aim is to vote on the report on 20 April in the parliamentary committee.
