Beata Kempa’s draft report aims to guide EU in combating hunger and malnutrition in poor countries

On Wednesday 26 January, MEP Beata Kempa (ECR, Poland) presented her draft report on food security in developing countries to the European Parliament’s Development Committee. This was welcomed as a good basis for developing the EU’s contribution to UN Sustainable Development Goal 2 – ‘Zero Hunger’ by 2030.

This report is intended to serve as a call to action for achieving Goal 2.1: ensure access by all people to safe, nutritious and sufficient food all year round, and Goal 2.2: by 2030, end all forms of malnutrition.

It focuses on two pillars of European policy: - improve the adequacy of food; - build resilience to crisis situations, taking into account the fact that the Covid-19 crisis has increased levels of poverty and inequality.

Building resilience should be our priority. Increasing the income of small-scale farmers is a very good way to fight poverty and build resilience in those populations to which we provide support”, Kempa said, citing “a moral imperative”.

Among other things, it calls for better market access, access to property for small farmers and women and increased access to innovation.
