On Friday 21 January, the European Commission launched a call for contributions on adapting European value added tax (VAT) rules to the digital age.
For twelve weeks, businesses, academics, Member States and all other interested parties can make proposals, including on digital reporting requirements and a single registration for businesses across the EU, as well as new rules for digital platforms.
This call for evidence is part of the European Commission’s 2020 action Plan for fair and simple taxation supporting the recovery of the European Union. It will present a package of legislative measures to reduce costs and administrative burdens for businesses, while helping to combat VAT fraud.
In December 2021, the European Finance Ministers agreed on a proposal for a directive reforming the European system of reduced VAT rates (see EUROPE 12848/8). The European Parliament must give its advisory opinion by spring 2022.
