EU Council adopts its priorities on human rights and on strategic partnership on peace operations and crisis management

On Monday 24 January the EU Council adopted conclusions on priorities in UN human rights fora in 2022 and on new priorities for 2022-2024 in the framework of the UN-EU strategic partnership on peace operations and crisis management.

In its conclusions, the EU Council pledges that the EU will address recently emerging risks to human rights, including hybrid threats, technological developments, climate change and the continuing consequences of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The EU pledges that it will continue to call on all states to respect international human rights law.

In its conclusions on peace operations and crisis management, the EU Council recognises the “mutually beneficial” nature of the long-standing cooperation between the UN and the EU in peacekeeping and in civilian, police and military crisis management.

It welcomes the broadening of the scope of priorities to respond more effectively to the changing threat landscape and to cross-cutting challenges such as climate change, disruptive technologies and disinformation, or the consequences of the Covid-19 pandemic. It also welcomes the inclusion of the issue of children and armed conflict as a cross-cutting priority.
