On Tuesday 18 January, the European Finance Ministers will meet to discuss, among other things, the transposition of the agreement reached at the OECD on the minimum taxation of multinational companies (see EUROPE 12869/15).
Ahead of the Eurogroup meeting on Monday 17 January, Bruno Le Maire, the French Minister for the Economy and Finance, reiterated the desire of the French Presidency of the European Union to make progress on this issue. “We will put all our energy into achieving minimum taxation and ensuring that this directive is fully adopted under the French Presidency of the European Union”, he said. “We fought for this minimum taxation, the text is ready, it is under discussion”, he added.
Irish Finance Minister and Eurogroup President Paschal Donohoe agreed. “Last year, Ireland took a very significant and important decision to support the OECD framework for a new framework for the taxation of very large companies”, he said. He also said that the directive presented by the European Commission at the end of 2021 was “very much in the spirit of the OECD agreement” (see EUROPE 12859/6) and that this initiative was “of great importance to citizens in Europe, in Ireland”.
