17/01/2022 (Agence Europe) – Vincent Raj Arokiasamy, founder of the organisation “Evidence” in India, has been awarded the Raoul Wallenberg Prize of the Council of Europe in recognition of his fight to defend the Dalits, historically known as the “Untouchables”. Hailed for his immense courage, the laureate has helped some 25,000 victims of countless human rights violations. Threatened, he has to live apart from his own family to protect them. The award ceremony will take place at 12:30 noon on 19 January. It will be broadcast live on the Council of Europe website, and will be followed by a documentary on Raoul Wallenberg, the Swedish diplomat who saved the lives of tens of thousands of Jews from the Holocaust. Established in 2014, the prize is awarded every two years and is worth €10,000. (VL)
