17/01/2022 (Agence Europe) – Driven by global gas markets, wholesale gas prices in the EU reached record levels in the third quarter of 2021, standing at €85/MWh at the end of September, according to the European Commission’s new quarterly reports on gas and electricity prices published on 17 January. These high prices have led to a surge in wholesale electricity prices and, in turn, to significant increases in retail prices. According to the Commission, the European electricity benchmark averaged €105/MWh in the third quarter of 2021, an increase of 211% compared to the third quarter of 2020. The surge in gas prices has also boosted coal production despite the rise in carbon prices. See the reports: https://bit.ly/3qAeNoE; https://bit.ly/3AeFlyX (DG)
