20/12/2021 (Agence Europe) – The European Commission said on Monday 20 December that it had approved the application for the inclusion of ‘Bayerischer Blutwurz’ from Germany in the Community register of protected geographical indications (PGI). ‘Bayerischer Blutwurz’ is a liqueur produced in Bavaria, mainly in the Bavarian Forest region, from the root of the tormentil plant. It is also produced in the Bavarian Pre-Alps, the Alpine foothills, and other mountain regions of Bavaria, which are characterised by mixed forests, moors, meadows and, in some cases, peat bogs with slightly acidic soils. These regions offer optimal geographical and climatic conditions for tormentil. The production tradition dates back to the 17th century. This new designation will join the 255 already protected spirit drinks listed in the eAmbrosia database. (LC)
