20/12/2021 (Agence Europe) – The German Finance Minister, Christian Lindner, announced, on Monday 20 December, the appointment of the German economist, Joachim Nagel, as head of the Bundesbank, replacing Jens Weidmann who had resigned. “In view of inflation risks, the importance of a stability-oriented monetary policy is growing”, he said via Twitter, calling Mr Nagel the guarantor of “continuity”, at the Bundesbank. Mr Nagel, a 55-year-old economist from the Social Democratic Party, is a former member of the Bundesbank’s Executive Board and is currently at the Bank for International Settlements and will take up his post in early January 2022. Under Mr Weidmann, the Bundesbank has generally opposed the ECB’s very accommodating monetary policy. Mr Nagel will sit on the Governing Council of the ECB together with his compatriot Isabel Schnabel. (MB)
