20/12/2021 (Agence Europe) – On Monday 20 December, the European Commission said that the Polish media law adopted on 17 December by the national parliament, targeting in particular a news channel critical of PiS, poses “serious risks” to media freedom and pluralism. The Commission has expressed its “concerns”, said spokesperson Christian Wigand, denouncing an “increasing politicisation” of the Polish media landscape. “Friday’s vote puts additional pressure on the media sector in Poland. It could lead to a limitation of media freedom”, the spokesperson added. This law aims to strengthen the rules on foreign ownership of the media and would in particular aim to prevent the news channel TVN24, owned by the US company Discovery Inc., from operating. The United States has also expressed concern. (SP)
