Austrian support for electricity production from renewable energy sources gets green light

On Monday 20 December, the European Commission approved Austrian State aid for electricity production from renewable sources.

The measure will help Austria reach its 100% renewable energy target in 2030.

The aid will take the form of a top-up premium, calculated as the difference between the average production cost of each renewable technology and the electricity market price.

For electricity produced from wind and solar energy and biomass, aid will be granted through technology-specific competitive bidding processes.

Austria has planned for mixed-technology tenders including wind and hydro, and has committed to open the renewables support scheme to energy producers established outside its territory (subject to bilateral or multilateral cooperation agreements).

The measure will apply until the end of 2030. The aid will be paid to beneficiaries for a maximum period of 20 years from the date on which the facility starts operating. Payments have been estimated to amount to around €4.4 billion until the end of 2032.

Austria wants to increase the share of electricity produced from renewable energy sources from the current 75% to 100% in 2030. The measure is one of the targets to be achieved by Austria as part of its Recovery and Resilience Plan. (Original version in French by Lionel Changeur)
