10/12/2021 (Agence Europe) – On Thursday 9 December, the European Commission opened a public consultation on the revision of EU rules on illegal discharges from ships at sea. The revision of the current rules is intended to bring them into line with the Directive requiring ships to deliver their waste to ports (2019/883). The European Commission believes that proper enforcement of the rules on illegal discharges at sea cannot be achieved without improved coordination between ship inspection (THETIS EU), maritime surveillance (SafeSeaNet) and pollution monitoring (CleanSeaNet) systems. In addition, the Commission would like to see the creation of a standard format for reporting on illegal discharges for the purpose of harmonisation. This consultation will remain open until 3 March.
