03/12/2021 (Agence Europe) – European Commission spokesman Eric Mamer declined to comment on Friday 3 December on Hungary’s non-invitation to the Democracy Summit in the United States on 9-10 December. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen will moderate one of the discussions. Twenty-six Member States and 84 other countries were invited. “We have no comment on the guest list, which is up to the organiser of this event and not us”, explained Mr Mamer. In retaliation, Budapest decided not to support the EU’s joint contribution to the summit. According to a US official, Washington wants to work with Hungary on issues of common interest, but, “at the same time, we are committed to supporting democratic institutions, human rights, the Rule of law, and press freedom”.
