25/11/2021 (Agence Europe) – On Thursday 25 November, the European Parliament approved – by 497 votes to 160 with 38 abstentions – the legislative own-initiative report by Swedish MEP Abir Al-Sahlani (Renew Europe) on new legal channels for economic migration to the EU (see EUROPE 12822/16). The report calls for the creation of a European talent pool and a platform that matches the profile of candidates with the needs of employers in the EU, on the basis of the EURES portal. It is asking for proposals from the European Commission by the end of January. MEPs also want to have an admission scheme for low and medium-skilled workers from third countries. They have suggested revising the rules for long-term resident third country nationals, simplifying the application procedures – including visas –- in the single permit legislation, and amending the rules on seasonal workers.
