The High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, announced, on Wednesday 24 November, that the EU would soon send an election expert mission to Libya “to ensure that the elections (scheduled for 24 December) are free and fair”.
Following a meeting with the Libyan Vice-President, Moussa Al-Koni, in Brussels, Mr Borrell said that a legitimate president with the support of the electorate in free and fair elections was what Libya needed. “I hope it will be possible and you can count on us to receive all the support we can give”, he promised Mr Al-Koni. He encouraged the Libyan government to continue to work and overcome the difficulties so that the elections can be held.
Mr Al-Koni also met with the Secretary General of the European External Action Service, Charles Fries, with whom he discussed EU-Libya cooperation, including electoral support, security sector reform and the management of Libya’s southern borders.
