12/11/2021 (Agence Europe) – Migratory locusts (Locusta migratoria) will soon be on the plates of consumers in the EU. The European Commission approved on Friday 12 November the marketing authorisation of these insects as a novel food under the EU Novel Food Regulation 2015/2283. Migratory locusts will be available in frozen, dried and powdered form, and can legally be marketed as a snack or food ingredient in a number of food products. Products containing them will be labelled to inform of potential allergic reactions. This is the second insect authorised in the EU. Dried yellow mealworms (Tenebrio molitor larvae) have previously been given the green light by the Commission on the basis of a favourable scientific opinion from the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) on the safety of foods derived from insects (see EUROPE 12712/8).
