COP26, launch of an alliance for “zero emission” cars and vans

A coalition of 34 countries and stakeholders launched an alliance for “zero emission” cars and vans on Wednesday 10 November at the 26th session of the UN Climate Conference (COP26) in Glasgow.

The signatory countries, including 12 EU Member States (the Netherlands, Austria, Denmark, Finland, Poland, Sweden, Cyprus, Slovenia, Luxembourg, Lithuania, Ireland, and Croatia) will “work towards all sales of new cars and vans being zero emission by 2040 or earlier, or by no later than 2035 in leading markets”, the alliance statement said.

The non-binding initiative also brings together developing countries such as India, Rwanda, and Morocco, as well as 41 cities, States and regional governments, 11 car manufacturers (including Mercedes, Ford, Volvo and General Motors), 28 owners and operators of vehicle fleets or shared mobility platforms (including Uber) and around 30 other organisations.

According to the statement, car manufacturers will “work towards reaching 100% zero emission new car and van sales in leading markets by 2035 or earlier” while owners and operators of corporate fleets or shared mobility platforms will work towards having 100% zero emission vehicles by 2030, or earlier where markets allow”.

The biggest car brands such as Volkswagen, Toyota and Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi are absent from the statement.
