08/11/2021 (Agence Europe) – A position paper published on Monday 8 November by the European Federation for Transport and Environment (T&E) reveals that heavy goods vehicles still far exceed EU legal limits for nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions. The study, conducted by the University of Graz on behalf of T&E, indicates that emissions when driving in the city are even up to twice the legal limits. In addition, T&E calls for “reducing emission limits to the lowest levels technically possible”. A new, more “ambitious” standard could, through a reduction of 4.2 million tonnes of nitrogen oxide emissions by 2050, prevent some 35,000 premature deaths, the paper says. While heavy goods vehicles account for only 2.4% of the number of vehicles on EU roads, their contribution to total emissions may be as high as 40%.
