According to an EU Council Decision of 4 November, published in the Official Journal of the EU on 5 November, the EU has decided to provide 34 transportation vehicles, 34 medical vehicles and 150 metal detectors, for a total amount of €10 million, to Bosnia and Herzegovina under the European Peace Facility to support the capacity building of the country's armed forces.
“The objective of the Assistance Measure is to enhance and upgrade the capabilities of the Demining Battalion of the Armed Forces of Bosnia and Herzegovina (AFBiH) through the provision of adequate equipment”, the EU Decision states. This will contribute to enabling Bosnia and Herzegovina to protect its civilian population better and increase the AFBiH’s contribution to military CSDP operations and missions, while strengthening Euro-Atlantic cooperation and cooperation with the United Nations, the Decision adds.
The duration of the Assistance Measure is 30 months. A first evaluation of the Assistance Measure will be carried out eighteen months after the delivery of the equipment.
This comes as the leader of Republika Srpska, Milorad Dodik, recently announced the formation of an army separate from the Bosnian army.
