03/11/2021 (Agence Europe) – The European Union is mobilising €2 million in emergency humanitarian funding for victims of the recent unprecedented flooding in 31 of South Sudan’s 78 counties, the European Commission announced on 3 November. To date, more than 750,000 people have been affected by the floods, which have killed 40 people, but projections indicate that more than a million people could be affected by the end of the year. These emergency humanitarian funds will be channelled through the International Organization for Migration (IOM) to provide vulnerable populations with water and sanitation facilities, shelter and other essential non-food items. “Prior to the flooding, around 70% of South Sudan’s population was already in need of urgent humanitarian assistance”, European Commissioner for Crisis Management Janez Lenarčič stressed in a statement.
