19/10/2021 (Agence Europe) – The European Commission launched on Monday 18 October a public consultation to adapt the rules on compensating consumers for damage caused by defective new or refurbished products. The aim of this initiative is that future rules should take better account of “developments related to the transition to a circular and digital economy”. “Particular attention will be paid to the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in products and services”, says the Commission, which believes that “continuous adaptation, limited predictability and opacity” can create “legal uncertainty for businesses” and “make it difficult for consumers to obtain compensation”. This consultation, which includes questions about who can be held liable for damages, will end on 10 January 2022. See the consultation: https://bit.ly/3n22Fd6 (TM)
