23/09/2021 (Agence Europe) – In a letter sent to British Secretary of State for Northern Ireland Brandon Lewis on 13 September and published on Thursday, 23 September, the Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights draws the UK government’s attention to its latest proposal regarding a plan to address the historical legacy of the “Troubles” in Northern Ireland. In her letter, Dunja Mijatović condemns the prospect of a statute of limitations that would bring all legal actions to a halt in order to replace them with a “body” responsible for collecting information on the events that occurred during the “Troubles”. The commissioner emphasises that this proposal does not take into account the United Kingdom’s obligation under the European Convention on Human Rights to investigate serious human rights violations, including killings and torture.
