In a letter sent to the EU Commissioners for Environment, Virginijus Sinkevičius, and Agriculture, Janusz Wojciechowski, several MEPs from the Renew Europe Group oppose the adoption of new legislative measures that could endanger French lavender production.
At the initiative of France’s Irène Tolleret and Sylvie Brunet, the authors of the letter express their “serious concern” about the content of discussions at European level on two pieces of legislation that regulate the use of chemicals in the EU and that also cover essential oils.
“We are following the progress of these discussions closely and want to stress the need to avoid lumping essential oils in with synthetic chemicals. It is important to treat these primary products, which have a long tradition and play an important role in the pollination process, differently”, said Mrs Tolleret.
The texts in question are the ‘REACH’ Regulation on the registration, evaluation and authorisation of chemicals and the Regulation on the classification, labelling and packaging of substances and mixtures.
