European Commission breathes life into new European Bauhaus movement

On Wednesday 15 September, the European Commission detailed its vision for a new European Bauhaus movement (NEB), which is an interdisciplinary initiative that aims to add style to European Green Deal initiatives in areas such as architecture, furniture and fashion. It is based on three inseparable values: sustainability, aesthetics and social inclusion (see EUROPE 12581/22).

In a communication adopted in the margins of the State of the Union address by its President, Ursula von der Leyen, she has proposed a series of actions and has given details on possible sources of funding from the EU budget (Horizon Europe and LIFE programmes and structural funds). 85 million would then be made available to fund the first initiatives over the period 2021–2022.

This will include: - the NEB Lab, which is in charge of preparing strategic actions (labelling of projects, search for innovative financing, analysis of regulations, creation of performance indicators); - social housing projects that respect the values of the movement; - a revised approach to the European Commission’s building strategy (renovation of the Visitor Centre, reflection on the development of the European Quarter in collaboration with local residents and the Brussels-Capital Region, construction/renovation of the joint research centres in Seville and Geel); - the co-creation of ecological transition pathways in the construction sector and textile ecosystems; - the organisation of an annual festival and prize dedicated to the new European Bauhaus (see EUROPE 12705/23).

Furthermore, Member States are invited to introduce the new European Bauhaus into their socio-economic development strategies, in particular through by implementing the EU Cohesion Policy 2021-2027.
