On Tuesday, 7 September, the European Commission was pleased to announce in a press release that more than €37 billion was invested in the context of the four cohesion funds (ERDF, ESF, Cohesion Fund, and YEI) during this first quarter.
The institution indicates that this is an increase of 6 percentage points in spending since the end of 2020. In total, €289 billion (58%) of the €494 billion planned for the 2014–2020 period was invested. During the first half of 2020, €23 billion had been spent.
This increase in spending is reportedly primarily due to the efforts made to reprogramme funds under the REACT-EU coronavirus response investment initiative (see EUROPE 12774/10).
